I don’t believe anyone needs to restrict themselves to 140 characters in order to make a point worth reading.

For a glimpse at what can happen when language and attention spans are constantly restricted, just check out what ‘Newspeak’ expert Syme says on the subject in Orwell’s 1984:

“Don’t you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it. Every concept that can ever be needed, will be expressed by exactly one word, with its meaning rigidly defined and all its subsidiary meanings rubbed out and forgotten…

“Every year fewer and fewer words, and the range of consciousness always a little smaller.”

So while I won’t be restricting myself to 140 characters (unless I want to, thanks Twitter!), I will try to make all posts as entertaining and succinct as possible.

Thanks very much for visiting my new blog – hope you enjoy it!

  1. Hello Ms. Hamill,

I am a student from California who is interested in poetry and how it relates to social justice. I came across your website and thoroughly enjoyed your work. I will be in Dublin, Ireland around the 20th of this month and I would like to interview you for a class that focuses on artistic process and resistance through art.

Please let me know if you would be interested.

Thank you very much in advance.
